ZAP-X NUE: High-precision radiotherapy in Nuremberg – leading-edge technology to support expertise
Non-invasive, efficient and with few side effects, for tumors and other clinical pictures in the head and neck area.
What is ZAP-X NUE?
High-energy radiation that can be controlled with millimeter precision to treat tumors and metastases in the brain, head and neck region. By using ZAP-X NUE, clinicians can often avoid conventional radiation therapy or surgery.
Precision is key: During treatment with ZAP-X NUE, hundreds of individual beams are focused on a precisely defined target area by means of a gyroscopically driven linear accelerator. This spares the surrounding tissue thanks to the low doses of the individual beams, but a very high radiation dose is achieved in the target area and the tumor tissue is destroyed.
In many cases, a single session will be sufficient. A custom face mask is made to hold the head in place, securing it in the exact correct position and eliminating the need for screws or frames.
When is ZAP-X NUE used?
Originally developed for the treatment of brain tumors, ZAP-X NUE is now used in a wide range of applications – from tumor treatment to pain therapy, from the treatment of vascular anomalies to the treatment of head and neck metastases.

Fields of treatment

ZAP-X NUE can be used for diseases that originate in the brain, from benign tumors to metastases.
Possible indications are
- Meningiomas
- Neurinomas
- Pituitary adenomas
- Vascular anomalies (arteriovenous malformation)
- Trigeminal neuralgias
- Hypoglossal neuralgias
- Temporal lobe epilepsies
- Tumors/recurrences
- Metastases
Prerequisite
For the ZAP-X to be used, the diagnosis must be as clear as possible, the tumor must be clearly defined and the area to be treated must not be too large.
Expertise
ZAP-X NUE is integrated into the Nordstrahl MVZ GmbH at the Nordklinikum Nuremberg. The interdisciplinary team of physicians is certified by the German Cancer Society and cooperates with 14 tumor centers in the fourth-largest oncology center in Germany. The ZAP-X NUE is state of the art, but it is only one option among a comprehensive range of therapies on offer.
What makes it better

Painless, non-invasive, precise and with only a few side effects, treatment with the ZAP-X NUE is often completed in a single outpatient session. Aftereffects and side effects are rare and cannot be compared to the limitations patients experience following traditional radiation therapy or surgery.
Benefits for patients
Often, a single treatment session is all that is needed, with no inpatient stay and minimal disruption to daily life.
- Outpatient treatment
- No pain
- Non-invasive
- No anesthesia
- Hardly any side effects
- Short treatment time
Benefits for relatives
Diagnosis alone is usually stressful enough. With the use of ZAP-X NUE, the circumstances surrounding treatment are more convenient and less demanding for relatives. Hospitalizations, follow-ups and limitations due to therapy side effects are minimal, and daily life can continue.
How it works

If treatment with ZAP-X NUE is an option, the treatment session is planned, delivered and then monitored by radiotherapy and medical physics specialists.
Diagnostics
MRI and/or CT images, as well as test results and medical reports, form the basis of the evaluation the ZAP-X NUE team uses to determine the course of treatment.
Planning
Radiation dose, irradiation angle and treatment duration: The exact procedure is determined by the ZAP-X NUE team using the latest planning software. The images required for detailed radiation planning are taken. Any cost-sharing arrangements are determined on a case-by-case basis. Some health insurance companies cover the cost of these services because of the benefits they provide.

Treatment
Detailed discussions and comprehensive information are provided prior to treatment and are based on shared decision making. All treatment-related decisions are made in consultation with the patient as an equal, and the treatment team also communicates with the patient as an equal. A custom mask is then fitted for fixation. The radiation itself takes place while the patient is lying down, and the doctor and the patient remain in constant contact during the treatment. After a final consultation, the patient can leave the practice.

Follow-up
After treatment, the success of the therapy is documented by taking new images of the affected area. Depending on how the patient was initially diagnosed, this takes place after a few weeks or a few months.
Planned, convenient, safe
The ZAP-X team coordinates each step of the therapy.
How long it takes

If the ZAP-X NUE can be used, the radiosurgery treatment will rarely take more than 30 minutes to complete.
The duration of the diagnosis, preliminary discussions, imaging, and mask fitting depend on the patient’s individual circumstances and needs.
What happens afterward

Precise treatment, targeted follow-up
Side effects are rare and depend on pre-existing conditions and radiation dose. Information on the patient’s individual risk is provided in detailed pre- and post-assessment consultations. Detailed documentation is provided on whether and how successful the treatment was. MRI images are used to record progress and status.
Follow-up treatment
In the majority of cases, a single ZAP-X NUE treatment is sufficient, but a subsequent treatment is also possible without any problems.

Treatment with the ZAP-X NUE:
When can I go home/back to work?
Treatment is on an outpatient basis. Patients can leave the practice the same day. However, it is not recommended that you drive a vehicle on your own. When you can return to work depends on your individual circumstances.
How long has this technology been in use?
The so-called Cyberknife has been in use successfully for 20 years. ZAP-X is its evolution and has been part of therapy in Europe since 2021. Nuremberg is one of three ZAP-X locations in Germany.
Who is responsible for the costs?
For all patients insured by our partner, the AOK, 100% of the costs will be covered. All other people with public health insurance must apply for coverage. Members of private health insurance companies must make an individual request, but some health insurance companies will cover this treatment without an application for cost coverage.
What kind of applications do I need to submit?
Depending on your insurance company (see Who is responsible for the costs?), you may need to apply for coverage; otherwise, no special requirements apply.
